(Sharecast News) - Wall Street trading got off to a mixed start on Tuesday, with the blue-chip Dow Jones on a course to give back yesterday's gains.
As of 1515 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.17% at 42,235.65, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.04% to 5,938.24 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.40% firmer at 19,319.66.
The Dow opened 69.83 points lower on Tuesday, reversing gains recorded in the previous session.
News that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development had decided to cut its US growth outlook was in focus early on Tuesday, stating it now sees the US economy expanding by just 1.6%, down from its previous estimate of 2.2%.
Following the news, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note dropped more than two basis points to 4.425%, while its two-year counterpart was only slightly lower at 3.945%.
On the macro front, US job openings rose by 191,000 to 7.39m in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, beating market expectations for a reading of 7.1m. Job openings increased in the arts, entertainment, and recreation, as well as in mining and logging. Going the other way, job openings decreased in accommodation and food services and in state and local government. Job openings rose in the Northeast, the South, and the West, but fell in the Midwest. Both hires and total separations were little changed at 5.6m and 5.3m, respectively.
Elsewhere, factory orders decreased 3.7% on a monthly basis in April, according to the Census Bureau, dropping to $594.6bn for the first decline in fice months. Orders were down 17.1% for transportation equipment, led by a 51.5% plunge in orders for non-defence aircraft and parts as Donald Trump's trade war saw airlines put a halt on orders for Boeing, which received just eight orders in April. Factory orders for computers and electronics, on the other hand, rose 1% month-on-month.
In the corporate space, shares in Constellation Energy rallied after it struck a 20-year deal to sell nuclear power to Meta Platforms, while Ford was in the green on the back of news that sales had surged 16.3% in May, and discount retailer Dollar General posted stronger-than-expected Q1 earnings and raised its FY guidance.
