Friday preview: Geopolitics, UK consumer in focus

(Sharecast News) - Investors' focus at the end of the week will be on geopolitics as European foreign ministers meet with their Iranian counterpart in Geneva.
The aim will be to obtain sufficient guarantees that Tehran's nuclear programme cannot be shunted towards military aims and thus forestall an escalation in the current conflict.
On home shores, markets' focus will be on the consumer and public sector borrowing.
Overnight, consultancy GfK will release the results of its consumer confidence survey for the month of June.
It will be followed at 0600 BST by reports covering UK retail sales and public sector borrowing during the month of May.
For City analyst Michael Hewson, the strong start to retail spending in 2025 may be as good as it gets given the large jump in taxation and utility bills.
To that one should add the fact that unemployment was beginning to turn higher, such that "there is the very real possibility that it's downhill from here".
In parallel, Germany's Federal Statistics Office will release producer price data for that same month.
At 1230 BST, the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia will publish the results of its survey of manufacturing sector conditions in June.
