EU car registrations rise as hybrid, plug-in and EV sales surge

(Sharecast News) - New car registrations across the European Union in May were 1.6% higher than last year as sharp drops in combustion engine cars were outweighed by surging sales of alternative fuel vehicles.
Total registrations across the EU totalled 926,582 last month, up from 911,581 in May 2024, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (also known as ACEA).

Sales of petrol and diesel cars, which together still account for nearly two-fifths of all registrations, were down 18.6% and 27.6% at 263,953 and 85,698 respectively when compared with last year.

Meanwhile, sales of battery electric cars were up 25% at 142,776, while plug-in hybrids soared 46.9% to 87,301 and hybrid electrics jumped 16% to 315,597.

Hybrid electrics accounted for 34.1% of total registrations in May, up from 29.8% last year, while petrol cars' shares of the market slumped to 28.5% from 35.6%.

Battery electric vehicles had a 15.4% share of the market, up from 12.5% a year earlier but "still far from where it needs to be", according to the ACEA.

Figures for individual manufacturers showed a solid rise in sales for market leader Volkswagen (up 4.8% year-on-year at 263,787), Renault (+4.0%), BMW (+8.1%) and Mercedes-Benz (+3.9%), while declines were seen at Stellantis (-5.2%), Toyota (-1.9%) and Hyundai (-4.7%).

The biggest year-on-year drop, however, was seen at Tesla, with sales falling 40.5% to 8,729, as the brand continues to feel the heat from a mass boycott linked to founder Elon Musk's political activities.
