US close: Stocks mixed following Trump's EU trade deal

(Sharecast News) - Major indices delivered a mixed performance on Monday after Donald Trump revealed that the US and EU had struck a trade agreement.
At the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.14% at 44,837.56, while the S&P 500 ticked up 0.02% to 6,389.77 and the Nasdaq Composite saw out the session 0.33% firmer at 21,178.58.
The Dow closed 64.36 points lower on Monday, taking a bite out of gains recorded in the previous session as strong Q2 earnings and trade deals between the US and the likes of Japan and Indonesia gave sentiment a boost.
Trump said on Sunday that the White House had reached an agreement with the European Union to lower tariffs to 15%, down from the president's previous threat of 30% tariffs on most imported goods from America's largest trading partner.
Quarterly earnings from more than 150 S&P 500 constituents were set for release this week, including 'Magnificent Seven' firms Meta Platforms and Microsoft on Wednesday, followed by Amazon and Apple on Thursday.
On Monday's macro slate, the Dallas Federal Reserve's manufacturing business index rose to 0.9 in July, up from -12.7 in June, a broadly stable reading following five straight monthly declines. Factory production surged to 21.3, the highest reading in more than three years, while capacity use and shipments also turned positive.
Traders were also awaiting the outcome of the Federal Reserve's monthly policy meeting, which concludes on Wednesday, with the central bank expected to keep interest rates at their current target range of 4.25% to 4.5%, and June's personal consumption expenditures price, the Fed's preferred measure of inflation, set for release on Thursday.
