US open: Stocks lower following hotter-than-expected PPI reading

(Sharecast News) - Major indices were in the red at the open on Thursday as investors digested last month's producer price index and weekly jobless claims data.
As of 1450 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.38% at 44,750.37, while the S&P 500 shed 0.23% to 6,451.84, and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.06% softer at 21,699.11.

The Dow opened 171.90 points lower on Thursday, taking a bite out of solid gains recorded in the previous session as sentiment continued to get a boost from tamer-than-expected CPI data.

Thursday's primary focus will likely be on July's producer price index reading, which revealed annual producer price inflation rose by 3.3% year-on-year last month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the largest 12-month increase since February. July's wholesale price inflation print was also well and truly ahead of the upwardly revised 2.4% increase in June and forecasts of 2.5%.

On a monthly basis, producer prices rose 0.9% against June's flat reading, also ahead of the 0.2% increase expected by economists. The BLS also noted that within final demand, more than three-quarters of the broad-based advance in July was linked to final demand services, which rose 1.1%, while prices for final demand goods increased 0.7%. So-called core PPI was also up 0.9% in July, compared to forecasts of a 0.2% rise, while the annual core rate came to 3.7%, ahead of expectations of a 2.9% increase.

Elsewhere on the macro front, Americans lined up for unemployment benefits at a decelerated pace in the week ended 9 August, according to the Labor Department. Initial jobless claims dropped to 224,000, down from the prior week's upwardly revised 227,000 print, versus market expectations of an increase to 228,000, while continuing claims decreased by 15,000 to 1.953m, better than the 1.96m print expected by economists. On the other hand, the four-week moving average, which aims to strip out week-to-week volatility, increased by 750 from the previous week's revised level to 221,750.

In the corporate space, tech giant Cisco traded lower on the back of Q4 results that only narrowly beat, while Deere shares sank after the agricultural machinery business issued some mixed FY guidance.
