US pre-open: Futures higher ahead of macro data, Fed speeches

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street futures were in the green ahead of the bell on Monday as major indices look to bounce back from a losing week.
As of 1300 BST, Dow Jones futures were up 0.34%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures had the indices opening 0.44% and 0.55% firmer, respectively.

The Dow closed 299.97 points higher on Friday as investors digested another raft of economic data.

Investors continued to weigh mixed economic signals and heightened political uncertainty early on Monday. While inflation data has largely aligned with expectations, strong labour market readings and upward GDP revisions have complicated the outlook for potential rate cuts from the Federal Reserve Bank.

At the same time, trade policy tensions resurfaced after Trump proposed sweeping new tariffs on pharmaceuticals and heavy trucks, adding to investor caution.

Market participants were also zeroed in on a potential government shutdown, with Congress Republicans and Democrats needing to lock in a government budget agreement before the end of Tuesday's session.

Trade Nation's David Morrison said: "US stock index futures were all sharply higher in early trade on Monday. Could this be the start of another rally as we head towards the fourth quarter? Or will there be other obstacles for US equities this year? One possible issue is the usual political battle in Congress to agree a government budget. This needs to be sorted by the close of play tomorrow. This time President Trump has warned that a failure to reach an agreement will result in federal job losses, which could turn out to be permanent."

On the macro front, August pending home sales data will be released at 1500 BST, while the Dallas Fed's September manufacturing business index will follow at 1530 BST.

Several Federal Reserve bankers will also deliver speeches throughout the course of the day, including Christopher Waller, Cleveland president Beth Hammack, St Louis president Alberto Musalem, New York president John Williams and Atlanta president Raphael Bostic.

In the corporate space, Carnival was set to report earnings before the open.
