US open: Stocks higher after losing week

(Sharecast News) - Major indices were mostly higher early on Monday as stocks attempt to bounce back from a losing week.
As of 1440 BST, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.02% at 46,257.86, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.35% to 6,666.66 and the Nasdaq Composite came out of the gate 0.64% firmer at 22,629.05.

The Dow opened just 10.57 points higher on Monday, narrowly extending gains recorded in the previous session as investors digested another raft of economic data.

Investors continued to weigh mixed economic signals and heightened political uncertainty early on Monday. While inflation data has largely aligned with expectations, strong labour market readings and upward GDP revisions have complicated the outlook for potential rate cuts from the Federal Reserve Bank.

At the same time, trade policy tensions resurfaced after Trump proposed sweeping new tariffs on pharmaceuticals and heavy trucks, adding to investor caution.

Market participants were also zeroed in on a potential government shutdown, with Congress Republicans and Democrats needing to lock in a government budget agreement before the end of Tuesday's session.

On the macro front, August pending home sales data will be released at 1500 BST, while the Dallas Federal Reserve's September manufacturing business index will follow at 1530 BST.

Several Federal Reserve bankers will also deliver speeches throughout the course of the day, including Christopher Waller, Cleveland president Beth Hammack, St Louis president Alberto Musalem, New York president John Williams and Atlanta president Raphael Bostic.

In the corporate space, Carnival shares were in the green early on Monday after cruising its way to a third-quarter earnings beat on the back of strong demand.
