(Sharecast News) - German inflation rose slightly to 2.1% last month on the back of higher food prices, federal statistics office Destatis said on Tuesday, confirming preliminary data.
On a harmonised basis to compare with other European Union countries, inflation was 2% year-on-year in December.
"The rise in overall consumer prices intensified at the start of the year", says Destatis president Ruth Brand.
"In particular, the price of food increased more in January than in the previous months. In the months from September to December 2025, the price increase observed for food was still lower than overall inflation."
"Furthermore, the increase in service prices continued to drive up inflation in January." Compared with December 2025, consumer prices in January 2026 rose by 0.1%.
Food prices in January 2026 were up 2.1% year on year, with a "notable" price increase for sugar, jam, honey and other confectionery which rose 10.9%, including a 21% jump in the price of chocolate.
Consumers also had to pay much more than a year earlier for fruit, meat and meat products.
Services prices rose 3.2% in January 2026 than in the same month a year earlier and have been markedly higher than overall inflation since January 2024, Destatis said, particularly in social facilities and combined passenger transport services.
Energy product prices fell 1.7% year on year, with household energy down 3.2% from January 2025, with consumers benefiting from a 3.2% decline in electricity costs.
