(Sharecast News) - German inflation dipped marginally in February, official data showed on Wednesday, in line with expectations.
According to Destatis, the Federal Statistics Office, the consumer price index was up 1.9% year-on-year, confirming the provisional estimate and consensus. The print compares to January's 2.1% rate and the 1.8% seen in December.
Month-on-month CPI rose 0.2%.
The harmonised index of consumer prices, a standardised measure used by all European Union countries, was up 2% on the same month a year earlier, also in line with expectations.
Ruth Brand, president of Destatis, said: "The increase in consumer prices slowed slightly in February. In particular, the rise in food prices eased significantly and had a downward effect on the development of prices, while services continued to drive up inflation."
Food prices rose 1.1% in January, down from January's 2.1% hike. The strongest increases continued to be seen in sugar, jam, honey and other confectionary, including chocolate.
In contrast, prices of edible fats and oils fell sharply, down 19.7%. Potatoes and dairy products were also cheaper.
The prices of energy products were also lower, down 1.9%, after household energy prices slid 3.5%. The fall was in part due to government measures, including reduced transmission network charges and the abolition of the gas storage neutrality charge.
