US pre-open: Futures rise as traders await key PCE inflation reading

(Sharecast News) - Wall Street futures were in the green ahead of the open on Thursday as market participants awaited a key inflation reading.
As of 1245 BST, Dow Jones futures were up 0.21%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures had the indices opening 0.69% and 2.18% firmer, respectively.

The Dow closed 182.06 points higher on Wednesday amid falling crude prices and better-than-expected quarterly earnings Micron Technology after the close.

Micron remained in focus ahead of the open after the chipmaker reported a sharp acceleration in growth in its third quarter, with revenues more than quadrupling as demand linked to the artificial‑intelligence boom continued to surge. Micron Technology said revenues came in at $41.46bn, well ahead of the $35.84bn expected, while adjusted earnings per share of $25.11 also beat forecasts of 20.78 per share. Sales were up from $9.3bn a year earlier.

Elsewhere in the corporate space, Olive Garden owner Darden Restaurants posted mixed quarterly results prior to the open as same-store sales growth fell short of expectations. FedEx and Wise will report earnings after the close.

Thursday's other primary focus will likely be May's PCE report at 1330 BST, with economists expecting to see headline PCE rise 0.5% on a monthly basis, slightly higher than April's 0.4% gain, and 4.1% on an annualised basis, also ahead of April's 3.8% rise. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core PCE was seen gaining 0.3% month-on-month and 3.4% year-on-year - ahead of April's 0.2% monthly and 3.3% rises.

Still to come, a final reading of first-quarter gross domestic product, the Chicago Federal Reserve's May national activity index, weekly jobless claims data from the Labor Department and last month's durable goods orders numbers will also be published at 1330 BST, while the Kansas Federal Reserve's June manufacturing index will follow at 1600 BST.
