Smiths News inks distribution contract with Associated Newspapers

(Sharecast News) - Print media distributor Smiths News has secured a new long‑term distribution contract with Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday and i.
Smiths said on Monday that the agreement, described by the company as "transformational", will expand the territories in which it acts as ANL's exclusive wholesale distributor, effectively giving the group national coverage across Great Britain for ANL's titles from January 2028.

The London-listed firm, which also noted that the contract term has been extended through to July 2037, said the expanded footprint would deliver an incremental revenue uplift of around £105m per year from 2028.

The award follows the News UK national contract announced on 17 June, with the two deals together representing around 36% of the UK newspapers and magazines market secured for Smiths News from January 2028.

Smiths reiterated that delivery of both contracts will require an expanded national network, but stated guidance on implementation costs, early‑life transition costs, network‑expansion benefits, dividends and financing remains unchanged from the June update. Further detail on the financial impact was expected alongside the firm's preliminary results on 4 November.

Chief executive Jonathan Bunting said: "The ANL brands are amongst the most recognisable in the UK and our agreement will allow them to be enjoyed by consumers across Great Britain for many years to come. The extension also supports retailers through the freezing of delivery service charges for the life of the contract.

"Today's announcement continues to reinforce our position as a trusted partner for our industry and further secures a sustainable future for print news distribution, reflecting our shared commitment to supporting the industry over the long term."

As of 1400 BST, Smiths shares were up 4.14% at 70.40p.
